In 1994, a 23-year-old South Carolina mother, Susan Smith, reported to police that her two young sons had been kidnapped during a carjacking. Authorities immediately began searching for three-year-old Michael and one-year-old Alex, while the seemingly devastated mother appeared on television pleading for the safe return of her children.
