A Flat Tire at the Bonefish Grill: The Savannah Gold Murder

Savannah Gold texted her mom or dad every time she got to work, and she did it in full sentences with actual punctuation. She was 21, an artist who put art school on hold to stay home while her mom went through chemo, and she waited tables at a Bonefish Grill in Jacksonville, Florida. One evening in August 2017, a text came from her phone saying she'd met a great guy and was running away, and her mom knew the second she saw it that Savannah didn't write it. Savannah's car was still sitting in the restaurant parking lot with a flat tire and her purse in the back seat. The detective who caught the case got his first real look at what happened from a camera the city was about to tear down. Her family never believed that text for a second.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,640
The text from Savannah Gold's phone had misspelled words and not one period in it.

2
00:00:10,640 --> 00:00:15,400
And she'd said in the text message that she met a great guy, they're running away together.

3
00:00:15,400 --> 00:00:18,440
Her dad got that message, so did her brother.

4
00:00:18,440 --> 00:00:22,080
Her mom took one look at it and knew her daughter did not write it.

5
00:00:22,080 --> 00:00:26,720
Though she then got in her car and drove straight to the restaurant where Savannah worked.

6
00:00:26,720 --> 00:00:36,720
[Music]

7
00:00:36,720 --> 00:00:58,720
[Music]

8
00:00:58,720 --> 00:01:03,560
Savannah Gold's mom said that she was fearless from the time she was a little kid.

9
00:01:03,560 --> 00:01:07,560
She didn't mind taking a risk when it was something that she thought was worth it.

10
00:01:07,560 --> 00:01:12,360
And you can see it in what she liked to do because Savannah Water's Skied played La Crosse

11
00:01:12,360 --> 00:01:15,640
in high school for Jersey Number by the way was 21.

12
00:01:15,640 --> 00:01:17,400
She was an artist too.

13
00:01:17,400 --> 00:01:21,960
She went to La Villa School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida and she got really into fiber

14
00:01:21,960 --> 00:01:28,360
arts and she got accepted to the Savannah College of Arts and Design, which is a big deal.

15
00:01:28,360 --> 00:01:31,200
And then her mom got cancer.

16
00:01:31,200 --> 00:01:36,040
She decided that she would put her art school on hold and stayed home through the chemo.

17
00:01:36,040 --> 00:01:40,160
She took a full time job waiting tables at Bonefish Grill in Mandarin.

18
00:01:40,160 --> 00:01:45,080
Every shift she'd text her mom or dad saying that she was at work and she loved them.

19
00:01:45,080 --> 00:01:48,720
In full sentences by the way with actual punctuation.

20
00:01:48,720 --> 00:01:54,720
Lee Rodarte Jr. ran the kitchen at that Bonefish Grill and he'd been there almost five years.

21
00:01:54,720 --> 00:01:56,120
He was 28.

22
00:01:56,120 --> 00:02:01,040
At some point they got together and how serious it was depends on who you ask.

23
00:02:01,040 --> 00:02:02,800
Her parents said they dated.

24
00:02:02,800 --> 00:02:05,120
Her friends said they were on and off.

25
00:02:05,120 --> 00:02:09,800
Lee told detectives they hung out a couple of times and figured they shouldn't, with him

26
00:02:09,800 --> 00:02:14,760
being the manager and all, and Bonefish did have a rule against managers dating employees,

27
00:02:14,760 --> 00:02:17,640
which somebody from the company confirmed.

28
00:02:17,640 --> 00:02:22,280
Co-workers said Lee was trying to get Savannah back and Savannah was done with it, done with

29
00:02:22,280 --> 00:02:23,280
him.

30
00:02:23,280 --> 00:02:28,240
Lee also told detectives that he was trying to work things out with another woman.

31
00:02:28,240 --> 00:02:31,520
It was a Wednesday in August of 2017.

32
00:02:31,520 --> 00:02:36,040
Savannah pulled into the Bonefish parking lot at about 5.31 pm.

33
00:02:36,040 --> 00:02:40,480
Her older brother Chris worked there too and when he pulled in for his shift he noticed

34
00:02:40,480 --> 00:02:43,640
Lee sitting in his car back into his spot.

35
00:02:43,640 --> 00:02:47,760
On a day that Lee wasn't even scheduled to be working.

36
00:02:47,760 --> 00:02:50,720
Savannah that day never clocked in.

37
00:02:50,720 --> 00:02:55,440
About half an hour later her dad and Chris both got a text message from her phone saying

38
00:02:55,440 --> 00:02:59,360
that she'd met a great guy and that they were running away together.

39
00:02:59,360 --> 00:03:04,280
The spelling in this text message was a mess and you won't find a single period in the

40
00:03:04,280 --> 00:03:05,600
whole message.

41
00:03:05,600 --> 00:03:10,440
Her mom told CBS that she knew the second that she saw that message that Savannah did not

42
00:03:10,440 --> 00:03:11,720
write it.

43
00:03:11,720 --> 00:03:16,400
She drove straight to the restaurant and found Savannah's car in the lot with a flat tire

44
00:03:16,400 --> 00:03:18,560
and her purse in the back seat.

45
00:03:18,560 --> 00:03:21,360
Nobody inside had seen her.

46
00:03:21,360 --> 00:03:24,320
The detective who got this one was Ray Reeves.

47
00:03:24,320 --> 00:03:30,320
Ray says about 9.15 that night his spidey senses were going off and when he sat down with a family

48
00:03:30,320 --> 00:03:35,080
they told him Savannah did not use drugs and she had never run away and that's when Chris

49
00:03:35,080 --> 00:03:38,720
finally mentioned seeing Lee sitting out in his car.

50
00:03:38,720 --> 00:03:44,200
The bank next door had an ATM camera aimed at that part of the parking lot and Ray says

51
00:03:44,200 --> 00:03:49,160
what it recorded was a phenomenal picture of a bush.

52
00:03:49,160 --> 00:03:54,280
Ray interviewed the staff one at a time on August 4 and Lee told him that he wasn't even

53
00:03:54,280 --> 00:04:00,800
in the parking lot that Wednesday and that was a bad idea because people had seen him.

54
00:04:00,800 --> 00:04:06,200
Lee also brought up on his own that Savannah used heroin and Ray says that Lee was the only

55
00:04:06,200 --> 00:04:08,640
one who had ever said that.

56
00:04:08,640 --> 00:04:12,400
While she was missing you'd find Lee checking in with their family and helping them pass

57
00:04:12,400 --> 00:04:14,080
out flyers.

58
00:04:14,080 --> 00:04:16,680
Back in the office Ray Sargent called him over.

59
00:04:16,680 --> 00:04:21,480
Jacksonville was pulling out every red light camera in the city because its own numbers

60
00:04:21,480 --> 00:04:26,600
said they weren't helping to cut down on crashes and by December they'd all be gone.

61
00:04:26,600 --> 00:04:31,360
One of them however was still up at the intersection by the Bonefish Grill.

62
00:04:31,360 --> 00:04:34,800
It's a long way off but you can still make out the lot on it.

63
00:04:34,800 --> 00:04:40,000
Ray watched a car matching Lee's sitting back in by the bank and then Savannah pulled in

64
00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:44,760
right beside it and she walked over and talked with Lee for a period of a few seconds before

65
00:04:44,760 --> 00:04:47,800
they both climbed into his back seat.

66
00:04:47,800 --> 00:04:53,240
Less than 15 minutes later the back passenger door flew open and then slammed shut.

67
00:04:53,240 --> 00:04:56,560
It did that three times and the car rocked.

68
00:04:56,560 --> 00:05:01,920
Ray says that Lee then got out and slashed Savannah's tire and a little after six he drove

69
00:05:01,920 --> 00:05:02,920
off.

70
00:05:02,920 --> 00:05:05,320
Savannah never got out.

71
00:05:05,320 --> 00:05:10,280
Ray went out and got a warrant for Lee's arrest but it was a bench warrant for driving on

72
00:05:10,280 --> 00:05:11,840
a suspended license.

73
00:05:11,840 --> 00:05:14,000
Anything to get him in custody.

74
00:05:14,000 --> 00:05:19,120
Ray walked into the kitchen and you've got Lee behind the grill with a knife in his hand.

75
00:05:19,120 --> 00:05:23,480
So Ray put his hand on Lee's hand and told him to put it down.

76
00:05:23,480 --> 00:05:26,120
Downtown Lee admitted that he had lied.

77
00:05:26,120 --> 00:05:29,920
He said Savannah had been telling the servers that they were still sleeping together and he

78
00:05:29,920 --> 00:05:35,240
was afraid that it would get him fired and he drove in on his day off to tell her to stop.

79
00:05:35,240 --> 00:05:39,480
He admitted he poked a hole in her tire with a little paring knife and then he threw in

80
00:05:39,480 --> 00:05:44,080
that it was a knife he'd use as a Phillips head screwdriver one time.

81
00:05:44,080 --> 00:05:46,520
A weird little thing to remember.

82
00:05:46,520 --> 00:05:51,720
He said Savannah then got on her phone and about five minutes later an old green Ford pickup

83
00:05:51,720 --> 00:05:55,600
with tented windows pulled up and she got into that Ford.

84
00:05:55,600 --> 00:06:00,360
The driver had a baseball cap on and Lee couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman.

85
00:06:00,360 --> 00:06:02,640
Then a detective laid it all out.

86
00:06:02,640 --> 00:06:05,320
She never got out of your back seat Lee.

87
00:06:05,320 --> 00:06:07,760
Video cameras don't lie.

88
00:06:07,760 --> 00:06:12,360
This partner in that room was a detective named Michelle whose daughter was Savannah's age

89
00:06:12,360 --> 00:06:14,800
and played lacrosse with her in high school.

90
00:06:14,800 --> 00:06:19,760
Michelle begged him to tell them because Savannah's mom had stage 4 cancer and just wanted

91
00:06:19,760 --> 00:06:21,760
to know where her daughter was.

92
00:06:21,760 --> 00:06:27,000
Ray says that he bit his tongue and he let the room get agonizingly silent.

93
00:06:27,000 --> 00:06:29,280
Lee started talking.

94
00:06:29,280 --> 00:06:32,560
He said Savannah slapped him and he slapped her back.

95
00:06:32,560 --> 00:06:36,080
He said he grabbed her when she was trying to get out and he thought he had her by the

96
00:06:36,080 --> 00:06:38,800
shoulders when he pushed her down onto the seat.

97
00:06:38,800 --> 00:06:40,680
He heard a pop.

98
00:06:40,680 --> 00:06:44,840
He said that he took her to his house where he had a fire pit out back.

99
00:06:44,840 --> 00:06:49,640
When they asked where Savannah was he said club duckly wrote just down the street from where

100
00:06:49,640 --> 00:06:51,240
he used to live.

101
00:06:51,240 --> 00:06:55,480
There's a pond out back that's so grown over and so covered in algae that you'd have to

102
00:06:55,480 --> 00:06:58,360
already know it was there in order to find it.

103
00:06:58,360 --> 00:07:01,880
And the sheriff's dive team went in wearing full suits.

104
00:07:01,880 --> 00:07:06,880
They found Savannah wrapped in blankets and a shower curtain and taped shut.

105
00:07:06,880 --> 00:07:09,200
She was just 21 years old.

106
00:07:09,200 --> 00:07:12,400
The medical examiner found damage to the cartilage in her neck.

107
00:07:12,400 --> 00:07:17,440
The burns covered about 75% of her body which made it impossible to pin down exactly how

108
00:07:17,440 --> 00:07:21,680
she died and the examiner ruled it a violent homicide.

109
00:07:21,680 --> 00:07:27,000
More than 100 people showed up for a vigil at Losco Regional Park and they made art for

110
00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:28,000
her.

111
00:07:28,000 --> 00:07:32,460
Grandmother had started painting her portrait before she died and she finished it after

112
00:07:32,460 --> 00:07:34,720
Savannah was buried.

113
00:07:34,720 --> 00:07:40,480
Right before jury selection in 2019, Lee filed what's called a "Stan Your Ground" petition

114
00:07:40,480 --> 00:07:45,920
which in Florida let you ask a judge to throw the case out because it was self-defense.

115
00:07:45,920 --> 00:07:50,120
This time he said Savannah slapped him and grabbed him around his neck and he grabbed

116
00:07:50,120 --> 00:07:53,960
hers to break her grip and felt it pop.

117
00:07:53,960 --> 00:07:58,840
Florida had changed that law less than two months before Savannah died and now prosecutors

118
00:07:58,840 --> 00:08:01,240
had to disprove his claim.

119
00:08:01,240 --> 00:08:03,760
Lee was just under six feet tall.

120
00:08:03,760 --> 00:08:06,760
Savannah weighed 90-something pounds.

121
00:08:06,760 --> 00:08:07,920
I don't buy it.

122
00:08:07,920 --> 00:08:12,000
At the end of that first interrogation, one of the detectives walked back in and asked

123
00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:17,280
Lee if Savannah had put her hands on him before he went out and did that to her tire.

124
00:08:17,280 --> 00:08:21,880
You can hear him say clearly no that happened after.

125
00:08:21,880 --> 00:08:26,840
He came in on his day off and he was sitting there back into the spot before she pulled in.

126
00:08:26,840 --> 00:08:27,840
Why back then?

127
00:08:27,840 --> 00:08:29,560
Nobody knows.

128
00:08:29,560 --> 00:08:35,920
A judge denied this crazy petition and the appeals court upheld it in January 2021.

129
00:08:35,920 --> 00:08:39,560
A few weeks later, Lee pleaded guilty to second degree murder.

130
00:08:39,560 --> 00:08:42,080
He took a 40-year deal.

131
00:08:42,080 --> 00:08:46,960
If you were in the courtroom during that synancing, you watched Lee keep his back to Savannah's

132
00:08:46,960 --> 00:08:48,320
family the whole time.

133
00:08:48,320 --> 00:08:50,520
Why his eyes when they read their statements?

134
00:08:50,520 --> 00:08:53,680
Her dad said that she had a lion's heart.

135
00:08:53,680 --> 00:08:55,880
Her mom talked about the number 21.

136
00:08:55,880 --> 00:08:59,920
It was Savannah's jersey number and she had a tattooed on her arm.

137
00:08:59,920 --> 00:09:06,360
She was 21 when she died and 2021 was the year the man who killed her went to prison.

138
00:09:06,360 --> 00:09:11,160
Lee's at Wacala Correctional Institution now and the state has his release date down

139
00:09:11,160 --> 00:09:14,120
as December 2055.

140
00:09:14,120 --> 00:09:19,040
People gave more than $28,000 to a memorial fund and the family said that whatever's left

141
00:09:19,040 --> 00:09:24,160
after the funeral would go to cause Savannah cared about, like Hubbard House, a domestic

142
00:09:24,160 --> 00:09:28,760
violent center in Jacksonville, and her old art school at La Villa.

143
00:09:28,760 --> 00:09:32,400
Her family uses purple butterflies to remember her.

144
00:09:32,400 --> 00:09:46,480
To them, a purple butterfly means her spirit is at peace.

145
00:09:46,480 --> 00:09:48,720
Thanks for listening to Ten Minute Murder.

146
00:09:48,720 --> 00:09:50,720
Vengeable True Crime Stories.

147
00:09:50,720 --> 00:09:54,040
Hello, I'm Joe, I'm the host and here's an email.

148
00:09:54,040 --> 00:09:56,440
Subject, my wife got me into this.

149
00:09:56,440 --> 00:10:02,760
Joe, I made fun of her for a solid year, called it Her Murder Shows, refused to listen on roadtrips.

150
00:10:02,760 --> 00:10:06,840
Then she put on yours somewhere around Nashville on a roadtrip and I didn't complain because

151
00:10:06,840 --> 00:10:10,880
I was too tired and she noticed and has not let it go since.

152
00:10:10,880 --> 00:10:15,520
So now we listen together and she brings in up whenever she needs leverage in an argument.

153
00:10:15,520 --> 00:10:16,520
Worth it.

154
00:10:16,520 --> 00:10:19,560
She wanted me to email you and tell you that I was wrong.

155
00:10:19,560 --> 00:10:21,440
So there it is, I was wrong.

156
00:10:21,440 --> 00:10:23,600
Kurt and Evansville, Indiana.

157
00:10:23,600 --> 00:10:28,000
Listen, I don't care how you get here as long as you are here.

158
00:10:28,000 --> 00:10:32,080
If you have to be coerced by your wife, then so be it.

159
00:10:32,080 --> 00:10:35,880
And hats off to you because a lot of people can't admit when they're wrong about something.

160
00:10:35,880 --> 00:10:38,560
Personally, I like to think I'm the opposite of that.

161
00:10:38,560 --> 00:10:42,360
I'll admit to being wrong about something I'm not even sure if I'm wrong about.

162
00:10:42,360 --> 00:10:46,400
Just so someone can never ever say, well Joe never admits when he's wrong.

163
00:10:46,400 --> 00:10:47,400
It's the opposite of the truth.

164
00:10:47,400 --> 00:10:50,240
I'll admit to being wrong about something I'm actually right about.

165
00:10:50,240 --> 00:10:51,240
But enough about me.

166
00:10:51,240 --> 00:10:53,120
Kurt, I really do appreciate you listening.

167
00:10:53,120 --> 00:10:57,080
I appreciate you giving it a chance and thank you to your wife for turning the show on and

168
00:10:57,080 --> 00:10:58,560
not giving up on you.
