I Choose You: The Caleb Flynn Case
An Apple Watch in a Tipp City, Ohio, house counted 105 steps in the minutes before Caleb Flynn called for help. His wife, Ashley, taught Bible classes for LifeWise Academy and coached 7th grade volleyball. Caleb led worship at their church, and years earlier he made it to Hollywood Week on American Idol, where he said in a promo interview that he loved his wife more than anything. Early on February 16, 2026, Caleb told a dispatcher somebody had broken into the house and shot Ashley. Investigators started with a garage door and a missing handgun, and then they found a church affair that ran to about 107,000 messages. We go through who Ashley was and the marriage she was living in, and then we go minute by minute through that night.

00:00:04,640 --> 00:00:10,560
Ashley Flynn, she kept notes on her phone about school registration, laundry, appointments,
3
00:00:10,560 --> 00:00:13,760
and even one about teaching her two girls how to pray.
4
00:00:13,760 --> 00:00:17,280
In September of 2023, she wrote one about her marriage,
5
00:00:17,280 --> 00:00:21,120
and she said in that note that she hoped Jesus would intervene.
6
00:00:21,120 --> 00:00:26,560
Her husband led the worship at their church, and he once even made it to Hollywood week
7
00:00:26,560 --> 00:00:30,560
on American Idol.

10
00:01:00,320 --> 00:01:04,480
Caleb Flynn is sitting down for one of those American Idol interviews.
11
00:01:04,480 --> 00:01:07,920
Those little packages they cut into the show so that you feel like
12
00:01:07,920 --> 00:01:13,040
you know somebody before they even sing a note, and he's a worship pastor from Ohio.
13
00:01:13,040 --> 00:01:18,480
This is season 12, and at one point he tells them he's kind of a crybaby.
14
00:01:18,480 --> 00:01:23,200
Then he says Ashley, his wife, is the one who encouraged him to try out,
15
00:01:23,200 --> 00:01:26,240
and he says he loves his wife more than anything.
16
00:01:26,240 --> 00:01:30,320
He made it all the way to Hollywood week before they cut him.
17
00:01:30,320 --> 00:01:35,200
Tip City is a little town north of Dayton, and that's where Ashley grew up.
18
00:01:35,200 --> 00:01:39,680
After high school, she went down to Lee University, a Christian school in Tennessee,
19
00:01:39,680 --> 00:01:45,360
and that's where she met a music ministry student from a small Minnesota town called Braum,
20
00:01:45,360 --> 00:01:47,600
and his name was Caleb Flynn.
21
00:01:47,600 --> 00:01:50,720
They got married in 2010 and they had two girls.
22
00:01:50,720 --> 00:01:56,000
Ashley taught Bible classes for life-wise academy and subbed in the Tip City schools,
23
00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:00,000
and she coached seventh grade volleyball, and also by the way,
24
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:03,200
volunteered at her church, Christian Life Center.
25
00:02:03,200 --> 00:02:04,640
She had a lot going on.
26
00:02:04,640 --> 00:02:07,520
She kept notes on her phone to keep track of it all,
27
00:02:07,520 --> 00:02:11,440
and if you scroll through them, you'd find things like school registration and laundry
28
00:02:11,440 --> 00:02:15,280
and appointments, and one note about teaching her girls how to pray.
29
00:02:15,280 --> 00:02:19,920
Caleb started out leading worship at a church in Vandalia, Ohio,
30
00:02:19,920 --> 00:02:23,120
and later the family moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina,
31
00:02:23,120 --> 00:02:28,080
where Caleb ran worship at a church called Free Chapel, and he stayed there about six years.
32
00:02:28,080 --> 00:02:30,480
They moved back home in 2021.
33
00:02:30,480 --> 00:02:35,120
Caleb went to work as a sales VP for Ashley's family's company,
34
00:02:35,120 --> 00:02:41,520
making about $200,000 a year, and he also led the worship at Christian Life Center,
35
00:02:41,520 --> 00:02:42,880
which was Ashley's church.
36
00:02:42,880 --> 00:02:48,160
The church brought on a young intern near the end of 2022.
37
00:02:48,160 --> 00:02:52,640
Her name was Alia Botner, and she was in her early 20s.
38
00:02:52,640 --> 00:02:54,960
Caleb, by the way, at this time was about 36.
39
00:02:54,960 --> 00:02:58,160
Ashley knew that her marriage was in trouble.
40
00:02:58,160 --> 00:03:01,440
She wrote a note on her phone in September of 2023,
41
00:03:01,440 --> 00:03:07,280
saying the marriage had no intimacy, and no respect, no fondness, and no appreciation.
42
00:03:07,280 --> 00:03:09,920
And she wrote that she hoped Jesus would intervene.
43
00:03:09,920 --> 00:03:16,720
Alia told the jury later on, it started small, with Caleb asking if he could come over for a hug.
44
00:03:16,720 --> 00:03:20,560
Caleb was apparently a "where's my hug at?" kind of guy,
45
00:03:20,560 --> 00:03:22,560
and then he told her that he had feelings for her.
46
00:03:22,560 --> 00:03:27,520
She said that in May of 2024, it turned sexual.
47
00:03:27,520 --> 00:03:32,400
When Ashley went away to teach Bible camp, Caleb and Alia spent those nights together.
48
00:03:32,400 --> 00:03:34,000
They called it "marriage weeks."
49
00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:35,760
They gave it a name.
50
00:03:35,760 --> 00:03:41,760
They deleted stuff whenever they would get nervous, and they still averaged about 300 messages a day.
51
00:03:41,760 --> 00:03:47,280
You end up with about 107,000 messages, and that's a lot of messages.
52
00:03:47,760 --> 00:03:54,480
The messages got ugly. In May of 2025, Caleb wrote that if he could kill Ashley and not go to hell,
53
00:03:54,480 --> 00:03:55,920
he'd do it in a heartbeat.
54
00:03:55,920 --> 00:04:02,240
Months before the killing, he told her he'd stayed up until 4am, thinking of ways to kill Ashley
55
00:04:02,240 --> 00:04:03,440
without going to jail.
56
00:04:03,440 --> 00:04:08,320
Alia said some pretty ugly things too, including one saying that she wanted to kill Ashley.
57
00:04:08,320 --> 00:04:16,080
The Flens took a 15th anniversary cruise that was August 2025, and that's where Ashley found
58
00:04:16,080 --> 00:04:23,040
the messages. She found out about the relationship. Ashley reached out to Alia herself and asked to meet.
59
00:04:23,040 --> 00:04:26,560
Alia told the jury that she never went because she couldn't face her.
60
00:04:26,560 --> 00:04:32,000
Alia kept pushing. It's all right there in the text messages if you go through them,
61
00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:34,800
where she'd give him a deadline, and he'd miss it.
62
00:04:34,800 --> 00:04:41,040
And they'd fall out and then get right back to texting until the last deadline passed in January,
63
00:04:41,040 --> 00:04:42,560
and they stopped talking completely.
64
00:04:43,040 --> 00:04:48,240
Alia told the jury that on Valentine's Day, she told Caleb that she had a date with another guy,
65
00:04:48,240 --> 00:04:53,120
and she said that same day, Caleb told her that he'd already asked Ashley for a divorce.
66
00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:58,800
That same week, Ashley was excited about throwing a gallon times get together for her daughters.
67
00:04:58,800 --> 00:05:06,080
Alia opens chat GPT on the evening of February 15th and asks whether messages can be permanently
68
00:05:06,080 --> 00:05:12,160
deleted, and she texts Caleb screenshots of the answer. Caleb, by the way, has been sick. He saw a
69
00:05:12,160 --> 00:05:18,240
doctor and he came home with a steroid, prescription, and an inhaler, and he's been saying the cough is
70
00:05:18,240 --> 00:05:24,080
why he isn't sleeping in bed with Ashley. Ashley's phone gets put on the charger at around 11.20.
71
00:05:24,080 --> 00:05:32,640
Caleb texts Alia shortly after midnight. He writes, "It's happening." Later, he sends February 16th.
72
00:05:32,640 --> 00:05:36,960
"Day I'll never forget." He also writes, "I choose you."
73
00:05:38,000 --> 00:05:44,160
You can follow the rest of the night on Caleb's devices. Somewhere before the 911 call, chat GPT
74
00:05:44,160 --> 00:05:51,600
and group me come off his iPhone. His Apple Watch logs some steps at around 120. The watch starts
75
00:05:51,600 --> 00:05:59,280
moving again at 218. It counts 105 steps. His AirPods connect, and the sound on his phone
76
00:05:59,280 --> 00:06:04,160
keeps flipping back and forth between the AirPods and the speaker for several minutes.
77
00:06:04,960 --> 00:06:09,680
And then the phone unlocks, and Caleb calls for help at 231 in the morning.
78
00:06:09,680 --> 00:06:14,640
Caleb told the dispatcher that somebody broke into the house and shot his wife.
79
00:06:14,640 --> 00:06:22,320
Officers found Ashley in bed shot twice behind her right ear. She was 37. Her birthday was
80
00:06:22,320 --> 00:06:28,880
eight days away, and her girls were asleep in the house. On the bodycam video, you hear Caleb sobbing
81
00:06:28,880 --> 00:06:34,240
and fighting to breathe, and he throws up. In outside, he says the girls are still sleeping and they
82
00:06:34,240 --> 00:06:39,440
don't know. Caleb told the police that he'd been on the bottom bunk in his daughter's room because
83
00:06:39,440 --> 00:06:45,040
the cough. And he heard a shot, and he said that he found a side garage door open and the handgun
84
00:06:45,040 --> 00:06:51,760
that he kept in his truck's console was gone. A state crime scene agent went over that garage door,
85
00:06:51,760 --> 00:06:57,760
and the handle was broken. And the dead bolt and the soft wood of the frame had no damage from
86
00:06:57,760 --> 00:07:04,080
anybody forcing their way in, so his conclusion was that somebody staged it. It was also a fridge
87
00:07:04,080 --> 00:07:08,400
right up against that door, so if you came in that way, you'd have to push really hard to get that
88
00:07:08,400 --> 00:07:14,560
fridge out of the way. At trial, the defense asked the lead detective if anybody ever weighed it.
89
00:07:14,560 --> 00:07:19,360
Nobody had, and really somebody should have. Seems like pretty important information.
90
00:07:19,360 --> 00:07:24,720
The Flynn's had a security camera that could have caught an intruder in the garage. It went offline
91
00:07:24,720 --> 00:07:31,840
January 26, and nobody knows why. Police arrested Caleb on February 19, before any lab results
92
00:07:31,840 --> 00:07:37,840
even came back. Investigators brought in an ATF dog and searched the woods in the storm drains,
93
00:07:37,840 --> 00:07:43,600
and they put vehicles up on lifts to look underneath. They gun, never turned up. Nobody knows where it
94
00:07:43,600 --> 00:07:49,840
went. Well, Caleb knows where it went, but nobody else. If you were on that jury, you listened to
95
00:07:49,840 --> 00:07:55,360
Alia read her own texts out loud for two days, and you heard Ashley's sisters say the girls were
96
00:07:55,360 --> 00:08:01,600
heartbroken when they found out about the affair. The cough that Caleb had came back up. The jury
97
00:08:01,600 --> 00:08:07,200
saw crime scene photos of the girl's room, and the bottom bunk was piled with stuff. An investigator
98
00:08:07,200 --> 00:08:12,480
said that it looked like you could only fit a small child on it. And Alia testified that Caleb told her
99
00:08:12,480 --> 00:08:18,160
that he'd been on the couch, not on that bottom bunk. Caleb's attorneys pointed out that nobody found
100
00:08:18,160 --> 00:08:23,520
the gun, and there was no gunshot residue evidence, and no eyewitness, and no confession.
101
00:08:23,520 --> 00:08:29,520
The prosecutor told the jury in his closing that Caleb said he was sleeping, and his devices say
102
00:08:29,520 --> 00:08:35,440
that he was awake and moving. The defense rested without calling a single witness, and Caleb never
103
00:08:35,440 --> 00:08:41,600
testified. The jury got the case on a Tuesday, September 29th. They needed about two hours. They came
104
00:08:41,600 --> 00:08:48,080
back guilty on all counts. Aggravated murder included, and Caleb cried while the verdicts were read.
105
00:08:48,080 --> 00:08:53,920
Caleb was back in court that Thursday for a short hearing, and when the judge asked if he had any
106
00:08:53,920 --> 00:08:59,680
questions, his voice cracked, and he started crying again. Ashley's family was there on Monday for
107
00:08:59,680 --> 00:09:05,920
the synancing. Ashley's sister told Caleb, "I do forgive you." Ashley's brother-in-law read a letter
108
00:09:05,920 --> 00:09:12,400
from one of the girls. "Mommy was the perfect person," she wrote. Caleb sobbed, sitting there in his
109
00:09:12,400 --> 00:09:17,600
orange jumpsuit. Ashley's mom read a letter from one of the girls, too. It said that Caleb had the
110
00:09:17,600 --> 00:09:23,600
best life ever, and he decided to throw it away for a girl who was half his age. Then it said,
111
00:09:23,920 --> 00:09:29,200
"And by the way, I don't plan on coming to see you." Caleb read a statement, and he said he failed
112
00:09:29,200 --> 00:09:35,520
his vows to Ashley. And then he said, "As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not
113
00:09:35,520 --> 00:09:41,760
lying when I say I did not kill my wife." The judge in the case called his actions a borne, and gave
114
00:09:41,760 --> 00:09:48,080
him life without parole. The gun and the tampering counts stack on more prison time. His lawyer says
115
00:09:48,080 --> 00:09:54,240
that they will appeal. Ashley's family is raising the girls now. After the verdict, the prosecutor said
116
00:09:54,240 --> 00:10:00,320
it was time for everyone to focus on Ashley, and her family asked that you remember Ashley for how she
117
00:10:00,320 --> 00:10:15,440
lived. Thanks for listening to 10 Minute Murder, binge-able true crime stories. Hello, I'm Joe, I'm the host,
118
00:10:15,440 --> 00:10:20,720
and this might be the earliest I've ever covered a case, just the fresh off of a guilty verdict and
119
00:10:20,720 --> 00:10:27,280
sentencing for Caleb Flynn on this one. And the reason that I covered this one is because of the
120
00:10:27,280 --> 00:10:32,960
overwhelming messages and emails that I've received about this case. So many of you want to
121
00:10:32,960 --> 00:10:38,400
me to talk about it to cover it here on the podcast. So this one jumped the line, this case that
122
00:10:38,400 --> 00:10:44,080
jumped ahead of all the other ones that were there. So this information is fresh, brand new, hot off
123
00:10:44,080 --> 00:10:49,280
the presses. Unless of course you're listening to this podcast episode like two years later, which
124
00:10:49,280 --> 00:10:55,600
is the weird thing about podcasts, by the way. I considered at one point having like 30 or 40 episodes
125
00:10:55,600 --> 00:11:03,200
only, and if I upload episode 41, I go back and delete the oldest one so that it's only like the
126
00:11:03,200 --> 00:11:08,320
most current 30 or 40 ones going. And then I was like, you know what, that's a lot of work. I'm not
127
00:11:08,320 --> 00:11:13,920
going to do that. So now we've got hundreds and hundreds of episodes for you to go back and listen to.
