There was a time when it was hard to say anything about Scott Lee Kimball with much certainty. A talented forger who had turned to a life of crime after a troubled upbringing, Scott had managed to dodge a harsher punishment when he agreed to work as an informant for the FBI. It was this collaboration that gave him a lifeline, one that he could use to make an honest life for himself. Now, the con-man of Colorado is serving time for four murders, and could be responsible for dozens more.

00:00:15.560 --> 00:00:20.800
Nobody could say that Scott Lee Kimball
had an easy upbringing. His parents divorced

2
00:00:20.839 --> 00:00:24.600
around the time he was ten,
and Scott with his brother moved into their

3
00:00:24.640 --> 00:00:30.359
grandmother's mobile home. It's here where
their neighbor, Theodore Peyton, entered Scott's

4
00:00:30.399 --> 00:00:36.280
life and began more than a decade
of sexual abuse. Before Peyton was brought

5
00:00:36.280 --> 00:00:40.880
to justice. Scott had sought escape
at the end of a barrel in a

6
00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:45.719
suicide attempt that left him with a
distinct scar on his forehead and, by

7
00:00:45.719 --> 00:00:49.600
the accounts of those close to him, a change in the way his brain

8
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:54.759
worked. Before and after this attempt, Scott had already been running into trouble

9
00:00:54.799 --> 00:01:00.119
with the law. Check fraud and
scams soured his relationship with Larissa Hints,

10
00:01:00.119 --> 00:01:04.239
who he had married in nineteen ninety
three and fathered two sons with an allegation

11
00:01:04.280 --> 00:01:08.519
of sexual assault from hence led to
a divorce, But it was a previous

12
00:01:08.599 --> 00:01:15.319
probation violation that actually led to his
arrest. When the FBI apprehended him,

13
00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:19.200
he had already fled to Alaska,
fallen into another engagement, and restarted his

14
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:25.959
scams. In prison, Scott quickly
used whatever intel he could gather among inmates

15
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:30.799
and staff to his benefit. He
built up his reputation and convinced a member

16
00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:36.480
of the FBI named Karl Schlaugh to
use him as an informant. Between poor

17
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:42.680
background checks that left overlooked rape allegations
against Scott out of the consideration and Scott's

18
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:49.120
ability to enter certain cliques in the
prison to gather information, Schlaugh accepted a

19
00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:53.920
decision that now defines his career in
all the worst ways. So for a

20
00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:57.040
very brief recap up to this point, Scott Lee Kimball was abused sexually as

21
00:01:57.079 --> 00:02:00.920
a child by a neighbor. He
attempted as suicide from the trauma related to

22
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:05.920
that. The injury to his brain
from the suicide attempt, his friends and

23
00:02:05.959 --> 00:02:09.120
family say, altered his personality and
decision making. He was never really on

24
00:02:09.159 --> 00:02:13.000
the right side of the law at
any point in his life. He was

25
00:02:13.080 --> 00:02:16.240
married and then divorced after a sexual
assault, arrested by the FBI, put

26
00:02:16.280 --> 00:02:21.840
into prison, and while in prison
infiltrated certain groups to his advantage. He

27
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:27.599
used the sneaky ability to partner with
the FBI to become an informant. Scott

28
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:31.080
Kimball left prison with a pretty good
deal skirting a tougher penalty. His mother

29
00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:37.360
and brother financially supported his new businesses. The FBI also put him on their

30
00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:43.960
payroll with a hefty first payment of
fifty thousand dollars. Leanne Emery's name had

31
00:02:43.960 --> 00:02:49.039
been given to Scott by another inmate, her boyfriend, Steve Holly. The

32
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:53.879
three had embellished long discussions about a
wild escape plan back when Scott was still

33
00:02:53.919 --> 00:02:58.479
in custody. After his release,
Scott met with Leanne. With her boyfriend

34
00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:02.439
still behind bars and a long history
of struggles with her bipolar disorder, Scott

35
00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:07.039
quickly pulled her into his world of
deceit. The last time she saw her

36
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:10.840
parents, she claimed she was going
to Mexico, but the real story is

37
00:03:12.039 --> 00:03:15.599
she was going on a cross state
road trip stealing checks with Scott. When

38
00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:21.520
her abandoned car was found and her
parents reported her missing, All police seemed

39
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:24.599
to see was a troubled young woman
who had decided to run off and might

40
00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:30.360
return at her own discretion. Scott
knew, of course, that Leanne would

41
00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:34.159
never be coming home. He had, after all, shot her in the

42
00:03:34.199 --> 00:03:38.840
head and seemed pretty certain about getting
away with it. His responsibilities as an

43
00:03:38.840 --> 00:03:45.439
informant also led Scott to a lady
named Jennifer Markham. Under the supervision of

44
00:03:45.479 --> 00:03:50.560
Schlaf, Scott was instructed to gain
her trust to lead to a criminal partner

45
00:03:50.879 --> 00:03:55.080
of another kingpin serving time at the
prison. A dinner date that Scott recorded

46
00:03:55.360 --> 00:04:01.199
helped little in forwarding the case,
only for Jennifer mar to disappear shortly afterwards.

47
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:05.840
When Scott made contact again after days
of silence, he insisted that he

48
00:04:05.960 --> 00:04:11.479
knew nothing about what happened to Jennifer. As often was the case with Scott,

49
00:04:11.719 --> 00:04:15.839
he was lying, but given Markham's
own troubled circumstances and connections to violent

50
00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:21.160
criminals, little came of it.
Scott's association with the FBI was one of

51
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:26.759
the many things about him that impressed
Laurie McLeod. Of course, when he

52
00:04:26.800 --> 00:04:30.079
gave her his number, she bought
into another lie, one where he represented

53
00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:34.879
himself not as an informant but as
a bona fide agent for the FBI.

54
00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:42.079
Scott Kimball slowly entered her life,
meeting Laurie's nineteen year old daughter, Casey.

55
00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:46.079
Casey was troubled, much like the
others had been, and when she

56
00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:50.600
disappeared, the police were again slow
to investigate. Laurie was not as quickly

57
00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:56.000
dissuaded, and Scott seemed to realize
this could be a problem. He needed

58
00:04:56.040 --> 00:05:00.480
to throw off suspicion from himself and
ease Laurie's mind, and he did that

59
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:06.319
with an engagement ring. The wedding
was quick and the honeymoon romantic, but

60
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:11.079
Laurie didn't know at the time was
just a few miles out from where they

61
00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:15.480
were camping. Her daughter's remains were
in the soil buried there by Scott Lee

62
00:05:15.600 --> 00:05:21.000
Kimball. The next few years would
see Scott changing as targets from vulnerable women

63
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:26.319
to next of ken, one of
his two sons from his previous marriage to

64
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:30.279
Larissa. Hence, he had a
clear favorite in Cody Kimball, and he

65
00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:33.839
seemed to resent Justin Kimball enough to
want to kill him. An incident where

66
00:05:33.839 --> 00:05:40.759
Scott had severely injured Justin enough to
be hospitalized, raised serious suspicions and Scott's

67
00:05:40.759 --> 00:05:44.480
mother, who believed he had tried
to kill his own child to claim the

68
00:05:44.519 --> 00:05:48.240
insurance money. There obviously isn't enough
time to go into this attempted murder of

69
00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:51.079
his own son, but I'll put
a link to that story In the show

70
00:05:51.079 --> 00:05:56.160
notes of this episode, Scott Kimball's
uncle, Terry, came to visit his

71
00:05:56.199 --> 00:06:00.439
nephew one day and then disappeared.
Shortly thereafter, Scott's wife, Laurie,

72
00:06:00.519 --> 00:06:04.639
walked in to see her husband putting
a couch on to the curb. His

73
00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:10.560
statements weren't convincing that the stain on
it had been from a dog and that

74
00:06:10.759 --> 00:06:15.120
Terry had escaped to Mexico with a
stripper and some lottery winnings. It was

75
00:06:15.160 --> 00:06:18.240
a pretty bad lie, especially from
someone as talented as deception as Scott.

76
00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:23.639
That wasn't his best work. But
for Laurie, the relationship was already at

77
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.560
its breaking point. Scott had already
started seeing a waitress, and his unwillingness

78
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:32.720
to discuss Laurie's still missing daughter had
all but concluded. Scott moved out,

79
00:06:32.920 --> 00:06:38.240
and between his frogs and the murders, it would only take a single pull

80
00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:43.920
at one of the many, many
threads to unravel everything. That pull came

81
00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:47.720
and Lafayette in two thousand and six, when an optometrist realized that there was

82
00:06:47.800 --> 00:06:53.439
something off with his bank account.
The bank called on detected Garry Thatcher to

83
00:06:53.480 --> 00:06:58.399
investigate, and Scott Kimball was seen
on security cameras as the person making a

84
00:06:58.519 --> 00:07:03.079
deposit into the account. Thatcher at
first spoke to Laurie McLeod. Among the

85
00:07:03.160 --> 00:07:08.040
multiple claims of fraud, she revealed, she also brought up that Scott was

86
00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:12.920
an FBI agent. That lie from
so many years ago stuck out the Thatcher,

87
00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:16.680
who quickly confirmed it to be false. Along with the mentions of Casey's

88
00:07:16.680 --> 00:07:23.120
disappearance and the incident that had nearly
claimed Justin's life, it seemed long overdue

89
00:07:23.160 --> 00:07:26.959
to give Scott a second look.
When the day of his arrest came,

90
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:30.920
Kimball didn't go graciously. He put
his foot on the pedal, instigating a

91
00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:35.040
long chase, threatening to take his
own life in a long phone call with

92
00:07:35.160 --> 00:07:40.639
schlaugh all for nothing. His gas
tank finally ran out in the town of

93
00:07:40.680 --> 00:07:44.000
Mecca and his car came to a
halt. It seemed like the truth that

94
00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:47.639
finally caught up to Scott Lee Kimball. Over the course of the next few

95
00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:54.439
weeks, Scott insisted that he was
innocent in the face of increasingly incriminating revelations,

96
00:07:54.720 --> 00:08:00.480
including Casey Mcloud's body being found after
Scott claimed she owed deed International Forest

97
00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:05.680
a deal was offered. If Scott
Kimball came clean and showed them the bodies

98
00:08:05.720 --> 00:08:09.199
of the other individuals who he was
highly suspected of killing, he'd be charged

99
00:08:09.240 --> 00:08:16.120
on only one count of second degree
murder. Scott accepted, leading them to

100
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:20.360
the remains of Leanne Emery and Terry
Kimball. He then claimed he didn't remember

101
00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:24.959
where he had left Jennifer Markham's body, and that meant the deal was off.

102
00:08:26.600 --> 00:08:30.600
In prison, Scott was not remorseful, just the opposite. He bragged

103
00:08:30.639 --> 00:08:33.759
about it. He bragged about more
victims, some of which the FBI began

104
00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:39.440
to take seriously. Among these were
Katrina Powell, a sex worker whose body

105
00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:41.960
had been found in a dumpster behind
him all in two thousand and four with

106
00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:46.639
both hands cut off. There was
also Lena Ray's Gettys, whose hands were

107
00:08:46.679 --> 00:08:52.080
cut off like Powells had been in
West Mesa, Albuquerque. There was also

108
00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:56.080
the possibility that Kimball could be tied
to a mass burial pit holding the remains

109
00:08:56.080 --> 00:09:01.879
of nine women. Today, the
case is still visible scar on law enforcement,

110
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:07.200
both local and federal. Reforming the
informant system was an obvious first step,

111
00:09:07.600 --> 00:09:11.000
and eyes fell on those Colorado departments
that had so quickly dismissed the urgency

112
00:09:11.039 --> 00:09:16.519
of looking for female victims just because
they had somewhat of a sketchy background.

113
00:09:16.159 --> 00:09:22.000
Schlaugh found himself under heavy scrutiny.
Although he was only suspended three weeks,

114
00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:26.840
he eventually left the FBI due to
difficulty with being assigned to other cases.

115
00:09:26.440 --> 00:09:31.879
For Scott Kimball himself, a two
eleven letter he sent to his family was

116
00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:37.360
significant, not only because it seemed
his most detailed descriptions of the debts yet,

117
00:09:37.720 --> 00:09:41.600
but also because it contained another admission
of guilt. He said that he

118
00:09:41.720 --> 00:09:46.120
was in fact responsible for Emory's death, shooting her twice when she tried to

119
00:09:46.200 --> 00:09:50.600
run from him. For Casey and
Jennifer Markham, he was less remorseful,

120
00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:56.639
still blaming their deaths on accidental drug
overdoses. Today, Scott Lee Kimball is

121
00:09:56.840 --> 00:10:01.480
unmasked in a way he might never
have expected. For him self and interviews

122
00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:05.639
from prison, he continues to jump
from one story to the next. Sometimes

123
00:10:05.639 --> 00:10:09.200
he reveals something new, Oftentimes he
outright contradicts what he had said before.

124
00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:16.159
But with every lie, Scott Lee
Kimball bolsters another truth about himself that he

125
00:10:16.360 --> 00:10:28.240
is a killer and a con artist. Through and through that is ten Minute

126
00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:33.679
Murder for today brief and bingeible true
crime. I'm Joe, the host,

127
00:10:33.799 --> 00:10:37.759
and I really appreciate you taking the
time to listen today. And as I

128
00:10:37.799 --> 00:10:39.320
mentioned in the middle of the story, in the show notes, you're going

129
00:10:39.399 --> 00:10:45.279
to find the news story. I
think it's from twenty twenty. They interviewed

130
00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:48.639
Scott Lee Kimball's two sons, one
of them he tried to kill allegedly.

131
00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:54.799
There's an interview with both sons there, and I'll put the link for that

132
00:10:54.840 --> 00:10:56.679
in the show notes of this episode, and I'll also post it on the
