The Serial Killer Shrine: The Shaye Groves and Frankie Fitzgerald Case

Her bedroom walls were covered in framed photos of serial killers. Her bookshelf was stacked with true crime and gangster biographies. And when the moment came, prosecutors say she used everything she'd absorbed from years of true crime obsession to try to talk her way out of what she'd done. This is the story of a relationship that turned lethal, a woman who thought she'd studied the perfect getaway, and the digital trail that proved otherwise.

Frankie Fitzgerald, 25, was found dead from a fatal knife wound to the throat in a Havant, Hampshire home on July 17, 2022. His girlfriend, Shaye Groves, was convicted of his murder after a five-week trial at Winchester Crown Court, where forensic evidence, mobile phone data, and body camera footage dismantled her claim of self-defense.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,520
Her bedroom looked like a shrine to serial killers, with framed photos of the Yorkshire

2
00:00:05,520 --> 00:00:09,680
Ripper, Myra Henley in Rose West, right there on the wall.

3
00:00:09,680 --> 00:00:14,900
And when her boyfriend ended up dead and her bed, prosecutors say that she used every

4
00:00:14,900 --> 00:00:20,200
trick she'd picked up from years of true crime obsession to try to walk away from it,

5
00:00:20,200 --> 00:00:45,640
and it almost worked.

6
00:00:45,640 --> 00:00:48,640
The country in the story we're talking about today is England.

7
00:00:48,640 --> 00:00:50,000
I've never been there.

8
00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:54,360
We speak the same language, but they pronounce things a little bit weird sometimes.

9
00:00:54,360 --> 00:00:56,920
And by weird, I mean just different from me.

10
00:00:56,920 --> 00:01:01,400
So if I say something wrong and you know that I've said it wrong, let's just agree to

11
00:01:01,400 --> 00:01:03,960
pretend I said it the correct way.

12
00:01:03,960 --> 00:01:05,520
Okay, thank you.

13
00:01:05,520 --> 00:01:11,020
Shea Groves grew up in Lee Park, on the edge of Havont in Hampshire, England, in a housing

14
00:01:11,020 --> 00:01:15,800
estate built after World War II to give bombed out Port Smouth family somewhere to live.

15
00:01:15,800 --> 00:01:21,920
By the time Shea was a kid there in the 1990s, it had become one of the most deprived neighborhoods

16
00:01:21,920 --> 00:01:23,400
in England.

17
00:01:23,400 --> 00:01:25,560
Top 5% country wide.

18
00:01:25,560 --> 00:01:27,400
That is where she grew up.

19
00:01:27,400 --> 00:01:31,680
Shea was partially deaf from a young age and she wore hearing aids in both years starting

20
00:01:31,680 --> 00:01:37,080
at around 11 years old, which made her of course an easy target for other kids.

21
00:01:37,080 --> 00:01:40,160
She leaned into horror instead of running away from it.

22
00:01:40,160 --> 00:01:43,960
She loved the child's play movies, you know, with Chuckie.

23
00:01:43,960 --> 00:01:46,880
She wore classmates started calling her Chuckie.

24
00:01:46,880 --> 00:01:51,400
By 13 or 14, the school had referred her for a mental health evaluation.

25
00:01:51,400 --> 00:01:57,480
As you came back out with a bipolar diagnosis, a judge would later call probably wrong.

26
00:01:57,480 --> 00:02:02,840
She started drinking and using drugs on and off started cutting her legs and at one point

27
00:02:02,840 --> 00:02:05,480
pulled a scalpel on a classmate.

28
00:02:05,480 --> 00:02:10,520
She left home as a teenager into a relationship with its own problems and things stayed rocky

29
00:02:10,520 --> 00:02:15,280
for years before a stretch where life kind of evened out for Shea.

30
00:02:15,280 --> 00:02:19,360
She had a daughter in 2017 with a man named Ashley Wingham.

31
00:02:19,360 --> 00:02:26,160
Who by all accounts was not violent toward her and around that time got a second diagnosis.

32
00:02:26,160 --> 00:02:32,000
Complex post-traumatic stress disorder pointing to trauma stacked up over years.

33
00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:37,480
She moved into a council house on botly drive in Lee Park with her friend Lauren White,

34
00:02:37,480 --> 00:02:42,520
another single mom and this is where her identity sharpened into something more extreme.

35
00:02:42,520 --> 00:02:47,920
Facial tattoos, piercings and a bedroom that looked like a horror movie prop closet.

36
00:02:47,920 --> 00:02:53,920
She had framed photos of Peter Suckliff, the Yorkshire Ripper, Myra Henley, Rose West,

37
00:02:53,920 --> 00:02:56,160
and Jeffrey Dahmer on the walls.

38
00:02:56,160 --> 00:03:01,040
All of those people by the way I've covered here on the podcast, they're all serial killers.

39
00:03:01,040 --> 00:03:03,400
Gangster biographies she had on the shelf.

40
00:03:03,400 --> 00:03:10,320
A Celtic dagger, a ball bearing gun, two Viking style axes, and a flick knife tucked into the

41
00:03:10,320 --> 00:03:11,680
heel of her boot.

42
00:03:11,680 --> 00:03:15,160
She told the court the dagger was for pagan rituals.

43
00:03:15,160 --> 00:03:19,600
The judge didn't buy it since there were zero evidence that she'd ever practiced anything

44
00:03:19,600 --> 00:03:24,440
pagan and said flat out those weapons were there to be used if she ever decided that she

45
00:03:24,440 --> 00:03:26,120
needed them.

46
00:03:26,120 --> 00:03:32,040
In February of 2022, Shea met a 25-year-old from Portsmouth named Frankie Fitzgerald on

47
00:03:32,040 --> 00:03:33,040
night out.

48
00:03:33,040 --> 00:03:37,840
Frankie had two young kids with a woman named Charlene Scott and his own history including

49
00:03:37,840 --> 00:03:40,880
a domestic violence conviction against her.

50
00:03:40,880 --> 00:03:43,360
These two fell hard and fast.

51
00:03:43,360 --> 00:03:49,400
The judge who would eventually sentence Shea called the relationship nothing if not passionate,

52
00:03:49,400 --> 00:03:56,960
meaning rough sex, filmed encounters, cocaine, alcohol, and jealousy ratcheting up on both sides.

53
00:03:56,960 --> 00:04:03,320
They even, by the way, signed a sex contract witnessed by Shea's friend Vicki and set up

54
00:04:03,320 --> 00:04:07,120
a bedroom camera, something they both agreed to at the time.

55
00:04:07,120 --> 00:04:10,160
And no, I don't know the details of this contract.

56
00:04:10,160 --> 00:04:15,320
I imagine it involves sex, obviously, but I didn't think it was pertinent to the story

57
00:04:15,320 --> 00:04:19,240
so I didn't do a whole lot of research on this sex contract.

58
00:04:19,240 --> 00:04:23,800
By March, we're a month in and it's already falling apart and flashes.

59
00:04:23,800 --> 00:04:29,520
Frankie did cocaine, got angry, kicked her stuff around the room, and that same night Shea

60
00:04:29,520 --> 00:04:31,360
cut her legs again.

61
00:04:31,360 --> 00:04:33,680
The old habit resurfacing.

62
00:04:33,680 --> 00:04:38,960
Around this stretch, she told Frankie, Lauren, and others close to her that she had cancer.

63
00:04:38,960 --> 00:04:40,680
She did not have cancer.

64
00:04:40,680 --> 00:04:45,160
Her old doctor confirmed no cancer diagnosis was ever on the record.

65
00:04:45,160 --> 00:04:49,400
A judge later called this lie a tool that she used to pull sympathy and money out of

66
00:04:49,400 --> 00:04:50,840
the people around her.

67
00:04:50,840 --> 00:04:53,200
By April, the jealousy had teeth.

68
00:04:53,200 --> 00:04:58,040
Frankie found out about a text from one of Shea's old boyfriends and he lost it.

69
00:04:58,040 --> 00:05:02,560
Shea became convinced that he still wanted his ex, the mother of his kids.

70
00:05:02,560 --> 00:05:08,760
All while she was still quietly on the DL, seeing an old boyfriend named Declan Payne, careful

71
00:05:08,760 --> 00:05:10,640
to keep the two men apart.

72
00:05:10,640 --> 00:05:16,400
Lauren, watching it all unfold in a group chat, called them "dead girls walking" if Frankie

73
00:05:16,400 --> 00:05:18,520
and Declan ever met.

74
00:05:18,520 --> 00:05:22,880
By June, Frankie had blocked Shea's number after suspecting that she'd been out with Declan

75
00:05:22,880 --> 00:05:23,880
again.

76
00:05:23,880 --> 00:05:28,960
His text got darker, threatening to snap her in half if she slept with someone else and

77
00:05:28,960 --> 00:05:32,360
telling her cancer would be the least of her worries.

78
00:05:32,360 --> 00:05:36,920
Vicki, her friend, saw some of these messages and was truly scared for her friend.

79
00:05:36,920 --> 00:05:41,760
Two weeks before the murder, Shea's own kitchen cameras caught her talking through a plan to

80
00:05:41,760 --> 00:05:48,560
have male friends jump Frankie in an alley, with a stage cut on herself to look like a victim.

81
00:05:48,560 --> 00:05:51,720
Police later investigated it as a possible conspiracy.

82
00:05:51,720 --> 00:05:55,720
No charges came, but it shows exactly where her head was already.

83
00:05:55,720 --> 00:06:00,320
A small detail worth mentioning, this is a woman running cameras through her own kitchen

84
00:06:00,320 --> 00:06:04,840
and living room, and it never occurs to her that all this footage could just as easily

85
00:06:04,840 --> 00:06:07,600
be used against her later on.

86
00:06:07,600 --> 00:06:14,000
On the night of July 16, 2022, Shea's five-year-old daughter was with her dad for the weekend.

87
00:06:14,000 --> 00:06:15,000
Frankie came over.

88
00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:20,440
Lauren was home too, and the three of them drank while Frankie and Shea snorted cocaine.

89
00:06:20,440 --> 00:06:22,320
Frankie more than Shea.

90
00:06:22,320 --> 00:06:26,840
Frankie spent part of the night gambling online trying to borrow money and messaged Declan

91
00:06:26,840 --> 00:06:29,320
Payne telling him to back off.

92
00:06:29,320 --> 00:06:34,720
At 1.20 in the morning, Frankie found Declan's name saved in Shea's Snapchat contacts.

93
00:06:34,720 --> 00:06:39,560
They argued, mostly upstairs in the bedroom, which no longer had a working camera since

94
00:06:39,560 --> 00:06:42,200
it had been taken down earlier that month.

95
00:06:42,200 --> 00:06:46,360
At some point, Shea picked up Frankie's phone while he wasn't watching and found a Facebook

96
00:06:46,360 --> 00:06:50,640
exchange between him and someone claiming to be 13.

97
00:06:50,640 --> 00:06:56,600
She photographed it at 3.12 in the morning, a time stamp that becomes huge later on since

98
00:06:56,600 --> 00:07:01,760
it proves this happened before anything violent, which she left out was the fact that Frankie

99
00:07:01,760 --> 00:07:06,480
had blocked that account the second the person said her age, and that person was actually

100
00:07:06,480 --> 00:07:07,880
17.

101
00:07:07,880 --> 00:07:09,840
Not that that makes it any better.

102
00:07:09,840 --> 00:07:12,560
Frankie came upstairs and fell asleep.

103
00:07:12,560 --> 00:07:18,360
While he slept, Shea took the Celtic dagger that she kept by the bed and she cut his throat.

104
00:07:18,360 --> 00:07:21,400
The pathologist said that it only took moderate force.

105
00:07:21,400 --> 00:07:24,120
His jugular vein was completely severed.

106
00:07:24,120 --> 00:07:28,760
His carotid artery partially severed, and that first cut alone would have killed him very

107
00:07:28,760 --> 00:07:29,840
fast.

108
00:07:29,840 --> 00:07:33,880
There were zero defensive wounds anywhere on his body because he had never had a chance

109
00:07:33,880 --> 00:07:35,880
to wake up and fight back.

110
00:07:35,880 --> 00:07:41,560
Shea then stabbed him 19 more times in the chest after he was already gone or nearly

111
00:07:41,560 --> 00:07:42,560
dead.

112
00:07:42,560 --> 00:07:47,960
In hours, Shea facetimed Vicki, who later testified Shea was giggling on the call.

113
00:07:47,960 --> 00:07:52,520
Shea turned the camera toward Frankie's body, wrapped in a bloody duvet, and told her, "I've

114
00:07:52,520 --> 00:07:53,680
done him."

115
00:07:53,680 --> 00:07:58,160
She wrapped him in trash bags, brought Lauren in as an accomplice, and floated, bearing him

116
00:07:58,160 --> 00:08:01,240
in the garden or staging a suicide.

117
00:08:01,240 --> 00:08:05,160
Suicide, with 19 stab wounds and a sliced throat.

118
00:08:05,160 --> 00:08:09,680
She texted Vicki, claiming that Frankie had left her house alive, and even invited another

119
00:08:09,680 --> 00:08:13,600
man over while his body was still upstairs.

120
00:08:13,600 --> 00:08:17,480
She cleaned with bleach, strong enough that the police smelled it when they walked in,

121
00:08:17,480 --> 00:08:20,880
and left the dagger in the bathroom sink.

122
00:08:20,880 --> 00:08:25,140
She told officers Frankie had attacked her, and that she had footage proving that he'd

123
00:08:25,140 --> 00:08:30,600
raped her, and sent Vicki clips from their bedroom recordings edited to make consensual

124
00:08:30,600 --> 00:08:33,040
sex look like an assault.

125
00:08:33,040 --> 00:08:37,960
Police later recovered the unedited originals, which told a very different story.

126
00:08:37,960 --> 00:08:39,600
It all came apart fast.

127
00:08:39,600 --> 00:08:44,240
The body cameras on the officers caught her building up this false account in real time,

128
00:08:44,240 --> 00:08:47,880
before she'd had a chance to practice it and smooth it all out.

129
00:08:47,880 --> 00:08:52,880
And that 312 AM timestamp anchored the whole timeline against her.

130
00:08:52,880 --> 00:08:57,320
Every piece of evidence she thought she controlled worked against her instead.

131
00:08:57,320 --> 00:09:02,520
At Winchester Crown Courts, the same courthouse where Rose West, whose photo hung on Shea's

132
00:09:02,520 --> 00:09:06,760
wall, had once stood trial, the case ran five weeks.

133
00:09:06,760 --> 00:09:11,920
Ray testified Frankie had raped her repeatedly, and that she grabbed a dagger in self-defense,

134
00:09:11,920 --> 00:09:17,280
striking his throat to stop him and stabbing his chest to stop what she called the bubbling.

135
00:09:17,280 --> 00:09:23,280
And the jury didn't buy it, deliberating almost 18 hours before a guilty verdict on February

136
00:09:23,280 --> 00:09:30,360
16, 2023, rejecting that self-defense, loss of control, and diminished responsibility.

137
00:09:30,360 --> 00:09:35,280
At sentencing, the judge did acknowledge her rough childhood, the abuse, the deafness,

138
00:09:35,280 --> 00:09:39,640
self-harm, and said it counted for something, just not much.

139
00:09:39,640 --> 00:09:43,240
He accepted emotionally unstable personality disorder.

140
00:09:43,240 --> 00:09:47,800
You might have heard it called borderline personality disorder, or BPD.

141
00:09:47,800 --> 00:09:52,080
He accepted that as more accurate than the earlier bipolar diagnosis, and said that

142
00:09:52,080 --> 00:09:55,120
it reduced her responsibility slightly.

143
00:09:55,120 --> 00:09:59,400
He also didn't let Frankie off the hook, calling him a violent man who had threatened and

144
00:09:59,400 --> 00:10:01,360
sexually assaulted her.

145
00:10:01,360 --> 00:10:03,440
Both things were true at once.

146
00:10:03,440 --> 00:10:09,160
The judge sentenced her to life with a minimum of 23 years, and left her with one line that

147
00:10:09,160 --> 00:10:12,080
a lot of people who followed this case still repeat.

148
00:10:12,080 --> 00:10:15,200
The damage you have done cannot be undone.

149
00:10:15,200 --> 00:10:18,520
Frankie left behind two kids that will grow up without him.

150
00:10:18,520 --> 00:10:23,680
Chase's daughter will grow up with her mother in prison until at least the mid-2040s.

151
00:10:23,680 --> 00:10:29,120
Lauren White, briefly a suspect herself, was completely cleared, since she told police

152
00:10:29,120 --> 00:10:31,680
Lauren had no part in the killing.

153
00:10:31,680 --> 00:10:36,280
What lingers about this case goes well beyond, well past the serial killers' posters on

154
00:10:36,280 --> 00:10:37,280
the wall.

155
00:10:37,280 --> 00:10:41,640
This is a woman who spent years absorbing true crime documentaries.

156
00:10:41,640 --> 00:10:46,240
Building what she must have believed was a playbook, were getting away with something terrible.

157
00:10:46,240 --> 00:10:51,520
And then watched every piece of it come apart under the same kind of evidence those documentaries

158
00:10:51,520 --> 00:10:52,120
are built on.

159
00:10:52,120 --> 00:11:08,720
Thanks for listening to 10 Minute Murder, bingeable true crime stories.

160
00:11:08,720 --> 00:11:14,680
I'm Joe, hello, I'm the host, and yeah, sometimes when I talk to my mouth pops and I don't know

161
00:11:14,680 --> 00:11:16,800
how to stop that.

162
00:11:16,800 --> 00:11:21,880
People have noticed, um, it did it just now in case you missed that.

163
00:11:21,880 --> 00:11:26,680
I wish I knew how to stop it, I think it's because my lips are big, but it is what it is.

164
00:11:26,680 --> 00:11:30,200
Anyway, here's an email, subject, this felt weird.

165
00:11:30,200 --> 00:11:35,520
Hi Joe, I was listening to one of your episodes while assembling an Ikea bookshelf.

166
00:11:35,520 --> 00:11:40,120
There was something strangely satisfying about solving furniture problems while hearing

167
00:11:40,120 --> 00:11:43,280
about detectives solving actual problems.

168
00:11:43,280 --> 00:11:46,720
Not sure what that says about me, Melissa and Rochester, Minnesota.

169
00:11:46,720 --> 00:11:51,000
Melissa, I would argue that you have an actual problem.

170
00:11:51,000 --> 00:11:57,320
Our furniture problem, especially from Ikea, and by the way, I love Ikea, no shade to them,

171
00:11:57,320 --> 00:11:59,560
but there's stuff not easy to build.

172
00:11:59,560 --> 00:12:05,280
It's to the point where I'll pay someone to build the thing because I just get too frustrated

173
00:12:05,280 --> 00:12:06,280
with it.

174
00:12:06,280 --> 00:12:09,920
So I don't know how you were listening to true crime, which is tense and suspenseful at

175
00:12:09,920 --> 00:12:15,520
times, and also building something which takes a little bit of nerve, a little bit of patience

176
00:12:15,520 --> 00:12:16,520
to be honest.

177
00:12:16,520 --> 00:12:19,720
But I'm glad you were doing it and I'm glad you were listening, Melissa, I appreciate

178
00:12:19,720 --> 00:12:20,720
it.

179
00:12:20,720 --> 00:12:24,400
If you're a brand new listener to this podcast, maybe you're building some furniture, like

180
00:12:24,400 --> 00:12:28,880
Melissa was doing, make sure you hit subscribe wherever you're listening right now.

186
00:12:50,160 --> 00:12:51,160
possible.

187
00:12:51,160 --> 00:12:52,400
And that's going to do it.

188
00:12:52,400 --> 00:12:53,800
That's your episode for today.

189
00:12:53,800 --> 00:12:57,080
