In 1983, The Woodford Slasher was terrorizing the residents of Bellevue, Nebraska. Two boys had been brutally murdered and the community was terrified. The playgrounds were abandoned, bikes laid unused in yards and the local Scout Master gathered his troop for a lesson on how to stay safe, in hopes of preventing another victim. The Assistant ScoutMaster shared, “As long as we look out for one another, we’ll have nothing to worry about”. That Assistant ScoutMaster was John Joubert.

00:00:07.879 --> 00:00:30.920
Discretion, is it by, it's
maybe murder. In nineteen eighty three,

2
00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:37.119
the Woodford Slasher was terrorizing residence of
Bellevue, Nebraska. Two boys had been

3
00:00:37.119 --> 00:00:43.880
brutally murdered and the community was terrified. The playgrounds were abandoned, bikes laid

4
00:00:43.960 --> 00:00:48.439
unused in yards, and the local
scout master gathered his troop for a lesson

5
00:00:48.719 --> 00:00:53.759
on how to stay safe in hopes
of preventing another victim. The assistant scout

6
00:00:53.799 --> 00:00:57.359
master shared, as long as we
look out for one another, we'll have

7
00:00:57.439 --> 00:01:04.840
nothing to worry about. That assist
scoutmaster was John Jubert. John Joseph Jubert

8
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:11.439
the Fourth was born in nineteen sixty
three in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was

9
00:01:11.480 --> 00:01:15.319
an extremely intelligent child, reading by
the age of three. At age six,

10
00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:21.239
his parents got divorced. Staffter's father
tried to strangle his mother. Perhaps

11
00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:25.799
it's here where his sadistic fantasy started, since it was around that age that

12
00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:30.760
he would later recall thinking about stabbing
his babysitter. He even admitted to having

13
00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:34.920
thoughts about biting off parts of her
flesh, pretty unusual thoughts for a six

14
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:38.840
year old. In nineteen seventy four, his mother moved them to Portland,

15
00:01:38.879 --> 00:01:42.159
Maine, where he had a difficult
time getting along with the kids at school

16
00:01:42.439 --> 00:01:47.959
and was considered a vicious bully.
Although he was charismatic and knew how to

17
00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:53.760
manipulate adults to avoid trouble, except
for at home, his mother was controlling

18
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:57.000
and often humiliated him. She even
spanked him until he was almost as big

19
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:02.000
as she was. Considered an outcast, Jubert joined the Boy Scouts of America

20
00:02:02.200 --> 00:02:07.159
to meet people, and he excelled
in the program. He reached the highest

21
00:02:07.159 --> 00:02:12.120
achievement and became an Eagle Scout,
something less than five percent of members have

22
00:02:12.199 --> 00:02:16.319
accomplished. Yet all the skill sets
that he learned would not necessarily be used

23
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:23.199
for good. By thirteen, his
sadistic fantasies were sliding into the real world.

24
00:02:23.759 --> 00:02:27.319
He stabbed a nine year old girl
with a pencil. The incident was

25
00:02:27.360 --> 00:02:30.680
so intoxicating to him that the next
day he slashed another kid with a razor.

26
00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:37.800
He felt sexually stimulated by the events. He later attacked two boys,

27
00:02:37.840 --> 00:02:42.080
brutally beating and robbing them. In
the midst of the chaos. He managed

28
00:02:42.120 --> 00:02:46.479
to maintain his normal life, but
was getting bolder with every attack. In

29
00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:51.680
nineteen eighty one, he graduated from
Cheverus High School. Soon after, he

30
00:02:51.759 --> 00:02:54.719
enlisted in the United States Air Force. He had succeeded in the Boy Scouts,

31
00:02:54.919 --> 00:02:59.719
and the military seemed like a great
career choice. He was stationed at

32
00:02:59.719 --> 00:03:04.159
the Bay near Bellevue, Nebraska,
although the area would soon not be safe

33
00:03:04.319 --> 00:03:08.879
as it once was. On September
eighteenth, nineteen eighty three, thirteen year

34
00:03:08.919 --> 00:03:14.879
old Danny Everley disappeared while on his
newspaper route. It was discovered that he

35
00:03:14.919 --> 00:03:19.159
was missing after customers started complaining that
they had not yet received their newspaper.

36
00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:23.120
Danny's bike was found at a house
on his route with all the undelivered papers.

37
00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:28.280
His brother, who usually worked with
Danny, had no idea where he

38
00:03:28.280 --> 00:03:31.400
would have gone, but did report
seeing a white male in a tan car

39
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:37.120
driving around. Since it was considered
a child abduction, the FBI was called

40
00:03:37.159 --> 00:03:40.560
in. They immediately started searching in
hopes that they would find Danny alive.

41
00:03:42.439 --> 00:03:46.680
After three days of searching, his
body was found in tall grass off a

42
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:51.520
gravel road about four miles from where
his bike was found. Danny was in

43
00:03:51.599 --> 00:03:54.800
his underwear, his feet and hands
were bound with rope. His mouth was

44
00:03:54.840 --> 00:04:00.520
covered with tape. He had been
beaten, choked, bitten, and stabbed

45
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:04.120
nine times. His heart, liver, and lungs had been punctured. A

46
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:10.080
starlike marking had been carved into his
chest. The local authorities feared that this

47
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:15.240
was the beginning of a nightmare.
They started investigating known pedophiles that lived around

48
00:04:15.279 --> 00:04:19.160
the area. They brought in one
man that had molested two young boys.

49
00:04:19.800 --> 00:04:25.759
He not only failed the polygraph,
but his alibi did not hold up due

50
00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:29.360
to lack of evidence. He was
released. A couple months went by and

51
00:04:29.399 --> 00:04:33.560
the authorities had no new leads.
However, an FBI head profiler had started

52
00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:39.399
putting together a profile. He also
thought the rope used on Danny was crucial

53
00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:43.800
to the case. The FBI had
never seen that rope. It was so

54
00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:47.560
distinctive, with twenty six fibers and
one hundred six colors, they knew that

55
00:04:47.639 --> 00:04:51.240
they could find the rest of the
rope, they would probably find their killer.

56
00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:57.920
On December second, nineteen eighty three, twelve year old Christopher Walden went

57
00:04:57.959 --> 00:05:02.079
missing while walking to school. He
disappeared three miles from where Danny Everley's body

58
00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:06.279
was found. His family had very
little hope that he would be found alive,

59
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.879
and their worst fears were confirmed.
Christopher's body was found three days later,

60
00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:16.399
five miles from town. His body, discovered by hunters, had been

61
00:05:16.439 --> 00:05:21.240
better concealed than Danny's, but the
crime scene did have some differences. His

62
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:26.199
throat was slit so deeply that he
was almost decapitated, and he was not

63
00:05:26.439 --> 00:05:30.959
bound. Other than that, there
were too many similarities to not connect the

64
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.920
crimes. He was found in his
underwear and had a star like marking carved

65
00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:40.560
into his chest. The media was
calling the killer the Woodford slasher. An

66
00:05:40.600 --> 00:05:44.879
elderly woman saw Christopher on the news. She called and reported seeing a boy

67
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:48.480
that looked like him abducted by a
white male in a tan car. She

68
00:05:48.519 --> 00:05:53.720
didn't really believe that she saw such
a horrible thing happen until she recognized the

69
00:05:53.800 --> 00:05:59.000
boy on the news. On January
eleventh, nineteen eighty four, a daycare

70
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:02.360
teacher noticed a man and circling the
area. She found it suspicious and went

71
00:06:02.360 --> 00:06:05.879
outside to get a better look at
the car. The man noticed that she

72
00:06:05.959 --> 00:06:11.600
was riding down his license plate and
parked the vehicle. He started to approach

73
00:06:11.639 --> 00:06:15.360
her and acted like he needed directions. However, as he got closer,

74
00:06:15.639 --> 00:06:18.439
he pulled out a knife She took
off running back to the building and managed

75
00:06:18.439 --> 00:06:23.839
to get inside and called the police. The license plate belonged to a rental

76
00:06:23.879 --> 00:06:28.439
car. The car was currently rented
out to John Jubert. His car was

77
00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:32.920
in the shop his tan car.
With a search warrent in hand, the

78
00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:40.000
FBI approached Jubert's barracks. They found
a hunting knife and the exact rope they

79
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:43.920
were looking for. They also found
hair and pieces of the rope in his

80
00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:47.920
car. The rope had been made
in Korea for the US military. Jubert

81
00:06:47.959 --> 00:06:53.439
got the rope from the scout master
he served under. Jubert was also an

82
00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:58.920
exact match for the FBI's profile.
While being questioned, John Jubert admitted that

83
00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:01.680
he planned on Robbie the teacher,
and acknowledged that he had heard of the

84
00:07:01.759 --> 00:07:06.519
boys, but denied anything else.
When he was then shown pictures of the

85
00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:13.720
crimes, he was noticeably aroused,
even eventually admitted I did it. I

86
00:07:13.879 --> 00:07:17.319
killed those boys and what may or
may not be shocking. He admitted that

87
00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:23.240
if given another chance, he would
kill again. Even though Jubert confessed to

88
00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:28.639
the murders, he intended to plead
not guilty. After psychiatric evaluations, they

89
00:07:28.680 --> 00:07:32.000
decided that he was in his right
mind when the crimes were committed, although

90
00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:39.839
he was characterized as having obsessive compulsive
disorder, sadistic tendencies, and schizoid personality

91
00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:44.720
disorder. But since he couldn't claim
insanity, he changed his plea to guilty,

92
00:07:44.759 --> 00:07:47.680
hoping to get mercy from the court. The court in Nebraska did not

93
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:53.240
show mercy and sentenced him to death. The case of the two boys from

94
00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:58.000
Nebraska was used in a training session
at the FBI Academy in Quantico. It

95
00:07:58.040 --> 00:08:01.879
was there that an officer from Portland
May noticed similarities with an unsolved case in

96
00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:07.000
his jurisdiction. On August twenty second, nineteen eighty two, eleven year old

97
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:13.040
Ricky Stetson went for a jog on
the Back Cove Trail. His parents called

98
00:08:13.079 --> 00:08:16.639
the police when he wasn't home by
dark. That was the rule for many

99
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:20.519
kids before the days of cell phones, be home by dark. When he

100
00:08:20.560 --> 00:08:24.040
didn't show up, they started to
worry. The next day, a motorist

101
00:08:24.120 --> 00:08:28.319
discovered his body off the side of
Interstate two ninety five. He was dead

102
00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:31.559
and bloodied. Originally they thought he
must have been hit by a car,

103
00:08:31.960 --> 00:08:37.039
but upon further inspection they knew that
the cause of death was much more sinister,

104
00:08:37.519 --> 00:08:41.720
and the autopsy confirmed it. He
had been stabbed multiple times in the

105
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:46.320
stomach, strangled, and had bite
marks on his body. A suspect was

106
00:08:46.360 --> 00:08:50.519
apprehended and spent a year and a
half in jail before they confirmed that the

107
00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:54.840
bite marks did not match his teeth. The officer was able to confirm that

108
00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:58.360
Jubert lived in Maine at the time
of the crime, and the bite marks

109
00:08:58.360 --> 00:09:01.399
on the victim did match Jubert.
They were actually able to link him to

110
00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:07.919
several unsolved crimes and identified him as
the Oakdale Slasher, a killer that they

111
00:09:07.960 --> 00:09:11.720
had been looking for. Jubert stood
trial in main and received a life sentence,

112
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:16.720
maybe only because they didn't have the
death penalty. He was then sent

113
00:09:16.759 --> 00:09:20.240
back to Nebraska, where he faced
the electric chair. He appealed multiple times,

114
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:24.240
but his sentence was never overturned.
He sat down in that electric chair

115
00:09:24.360 --> 00:09:30.360
on July seventeenth, nineteen ninety six. Apparently, some people believed he should

116
00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:33.679
be shown more kindness than his victims
were, despite the fact that Jubert committed

117
00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:39.759
such horrifying crimes on children. After
his death, activists said the electric chair

118
00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:46.120
was unusually cruel and called for action
to be taken Nebraska now administers lethal injection.

119
00:09:46.039 --> 00:09:50.159
At the hands of John Jubert the
fourth at least three boys met a

120
00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:56.080
tragic and painful death, not to
mention all the other people he harmed physically

121
00:09:56.120 --> 00:10:00.360
and mentally over the years. Even
though he never sexually molested at any of

122
00:10:00.360 --> 00:10:03.600
his victims, he was aroused by
the cutting and the biting, and the

123
00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:09.000
questions remain. Was he trying to
satisfy abnormal sexual desires or was it more

124
00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:15.679
about power and control? Did it
come from trauma and his childhood? Aristotle

125
00:10:15.799 --> 00:10:18.879
argued that morality must be taught.
Could it be that he was never taught

126
00:10:18.919 --> 00:10:24.360
good? No, he was an
eagle scout and went to Catholic school.

127
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:28.000
Maybe he was a master manipulator,
a chamellion that could thrive in any setting.

128
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:33.159
By twenty years old, Jubert had
already terrorized two communities, becoming both

129
00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:37.840
the Woodford Slasher and the Oakdale Slasher. He was a man that signed up

130
00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:43.440
to serve his country and parents trusted
with their young boys. Had he not

131
00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:46.960
been caught so soon and moved to
more air force bases, who knows how

132
00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:52.919
many communities could have been affected.
Evil doesn't always wear horns. Sometimes it

133
00:10:52.960 --> 00:11:11.639
wears a uniform. That's ten Minute
Murder for today brief and binge able true

Your positive feedback is very much appreciated,

143
00:11:43.960 --> 00:11:46.320
very quickly. Let's read an email
since I haven't done that in the

144
00:11:46.360 --> 00:11:50.039
last few episodes. Hi, Joe, My sister and I love your podcast

145
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:54.639
and discuss the cases after listening to
your take on them all the time.

146
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:58.320
My question is are you good at
saying tongue twisters? We know you can

147
00:11:58.360 --> 00:12:01.399
barely pronounce its names, but you
seem to be good with everything else.

148
00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:07.000
Please say this phrase A box of
mixed biscuits and a biscuit mixer. A

149
00:12:07.039 --> 00:12:11.279
box of mixed biscuits and a biscuit
mixer. That is kind of tough.

150
00:12:11.320 --> 00:12:13.440
I can say it, but it's
not easy. A box of mixed biscuits

151
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:16.360
and a biscuit mixer. Yeah,
it's tough, but I can normally do

152
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:20.279
those. I don't know why,
but that's just something I've been able to

153
00:12:20.279 --> 00:12:24.080
do, and it's absolutely useless,
to be honest. Kaylee, thank you

154
00:12:24.200 --> 00:12:26.039
and your sister so much for listening. I love Nashville, by the way.

155
00:12:26.279 --> 00:12:31.600
It's a fantastic city and apparently where
everyone goes for bachelorette parties. Anytime

156
00:12:31.639 --> 00:12:35.919
I'm in Nashville, if you get
around Broadway, you can't stir them with

157
00:12:35.960 --> 00:12:39.320
a stick. Bachelorette parties everywhere.
Okay, that's it. That is the

158
00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:43.799
end of this episode. But if
you're onto the next one, I'll see

159
00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:48.120
you there. But if not,
have a good night or morning or afternoon.
